Affordable housing is a challenge even for families in the workforce. But thanks to the collaborative efforts of many organizations in McDowell County, 168 new units of workforce housing will begin construction in 2021. This unique partnership is led by Gateway Wellness Foundation, McDowell County Government, the City of Marion, McDowell Technical Community College, Housing Assistance Corporation (a nonprofit housing developer), and Dogwood Health Trust. 

“The lack of available housing is a major challenge in the economic development arena. Companies recognize that quality housing must be available for them to recruit and retain talent into their workforce. Dogwood Health Trust stepped up on this issue in a major way, supporting leadership and expertise to make workforce housing a reality for our community. We anticipate that this project will generate nearly $20 million in economic activity.”
